Thomas has been an active member of CCAT’s leadership team for the past five years. In this new role he will work directly with CCAT members to spearhead the organization’s numerous efforts to provide a forward-thinking voice for Colorado counties at the statehouse and the federal level. This will include policy work on health care access, affordable housing, forest health and transportation policy. Aponte & Busam has staffed CCAT since its founding in 2017 and has supported the organization’s successful expansion.
Thomas came to Colorado in 1985 from his family’s farm in eastern Kansas. He had just finished his political science degree at the University of Kansas and was contemplating law school. However, his love of skiing and Colorado’s great outdoors called him to a different path. At age 22 he became a lift operator at Arapahoe Basin.
With that fateful decision Thomas embraced Colorado as his home, working in the ski industry for twenty years to become the director of development for Vail Resorts, guiding on-mountain expansion of both Keystone and Breckenridge resorts. In December of 2006 Thomas was appointed to serve as a Commissioner for Summit County Colorado, becoming one of the first openly gay commissioners in Colorado. He was reelected to serve on the Board until his term expired in December of 2020.
